Went to the yearly Christmas gathering at the house of Char’s uncle. It’s nice but by no means extraordinary.
There are a lot of different family members and that means different lives, values, interests – none of them particulary resonant with mine.
But I had good talks all around, especially with Char’s cousin. It turned out he was an idealist who took a strong stance on consumerism and for the environment.
We both agreed that it was a lot easier to take that stance than actually live it, but I was glad to hear it said aloud – and he was an unexpected quarter: a former military man, who is now directing train traffic in the capital area.
Sometimes it’s good to have your prejudices about people – and who they are – turned a little upside down.
